Jeff Schewe Method

Jeff Schewe is one of the original PhotoShop gurus, he's been using it since version 1.0. This is a technique I found buried deep in his website. I'm sure others have come up with the same technique, but I bet Jeff Schewe was one of the first, if not the first. This method resulted in the sharpest and yet most natural scan.

Here's how I made this scan:

1. I went through the image, and after making several selections and copying them, I created the following layers:

I carefully selected the eyebrows, lashes, pupils, nose, lips, and hair to form masks like this:

2. Next, I selected each individual layer and using PhotoShop's Unsharp Mask, sharpened each according to my preference. Heavy on the pupils, lighter on the lashes, and eyebrow, lighter still on lips and nose. I sharpened the hair the least, as it has some noise in the shadow areas, and would look unnatural if over-sharpened.

Conclusion:

This technique was not quite as time consuming as one would guess, and the results are the best of any of the methods I tried. It allowed the most control, and I was able to avoid any halo artifacting. You may not agree with the look of my result, but you can certainly see how much control you have over the final image. Best of all, it's nondestructive. The only drawback is that it uses an awful lot of memory with all of those layers. You can learn more about the amazing Jeff Schewe here:
