PhotoShop Unsharp Masking Here is the image after PhotoShop Unsharp Masking. It looks good, but suffers from halo artifacts and having to be a global setting. If you look above the nostrils and around the lashes you can see the white halos. Also, the pupils aren't very sharp. Here's how I made this scan: 1. I went to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask..., and made the following settings:
I chose a Radius of 1.8 pixels because the scan was at 1600dpi and this is what I've found works best at that dpi. I set the Amount and Threshold rather conservatively, trying to balance halo artifacts with sharpness. Conclusion: PhotoShop's own Unsharp Masking worked surprisingly well, coming in 3rd overall. It's biggest fault lies in it being a global filter. Also, it's the fastest method. |
